In the first few days of this new year
I stand between both faith and fear.
The structures we once trusted in—
assured they’d always be—
are battered by the gathering storm,
shaken violently.
Governments, economies, social orders, law—
all deemed expendable
in fear’s constricting claw.
I stare into this present year
with no clear map in hand.
I move ahead step by step,
not needing a detailed plan.
Fear demands the road ahead
be charted, lit, and sealed—
no step is taken
without a guarantee revealed.
But faith looks past all earthly powers
and softly, surely sings.
It knows whose hand is holding
the very heart of kings.
The hand of Providence unseen—
against His power, no defense.
He moves it left, He moves it right,
He brings both darkness and the light.
In this new year, some kings will rise,
and others surely fall.
Our faith keeps balance in the truth
of Him who rules it all.
So Pharaohs come, and Pharaohs go.
They rarely understand
that in their arrogant striving
they’re merely puppets in Sovereignty’s hand.
